Apple has introduced a new button on all new iPhones, introducing a new "Camera Control" button that can quickly launch the camera, take photos, record videos, and even adjust advanced features such as image focus and exposure. The button recognizes gestures through tactile feedback and sensors, and can also select different camera functions and zoom by tapping or sliding.
In addition, the iPhone 16's "Visual Intelligence" feature can also be activated through this button. This feature is similar to Google Lens, which can identify surrounding objects, animals or places and provide relevant information.
Although the button is mainly used for camera control, it shows that Apple is capable of integrating Touch ID (fingerprint recognition) into similar functions. This also proves that Apple can always reintroduce Touch ID through similar hardware design.
How Camera Controls Work
The camera control button is located below the power button, but it is flush with the surface and does not protrude like the standby or volume buttons. Apple says this button is made of "sapphire crystal with a smooth texture." There is also a stainless steel frame around the button.
To use the camera controls, just tap once. It will open the camera app whether you're holding your iPhone 16 in portrait or landscape orientation.
Tap the camera button again to take a photo. Press and hold the button to record a video.
The button is also equipped with a high-precision pressure sensor to provide tactile feedback. In addition, a "multi-touch capacitive sensor" is located under the sapphire glass and works with the signal processor to recognize touch gestures.
The iPhone 16 will differentiate between a full press and a light tap. The latter will bring up a new menu on the screen below the button, letting you choose different camera options or adjust the zoom. You'll need to slide your finger to select a menu or adjust the zoom.
Double-tapping will open more control options.
Finally, via an update later this year, the camera control buttons will support a two-stage shutter feature, allowing you to lock focus and exposure like a professional camera. Tap to recompose without losing focus.
Visual Intelligence Function
To use the Apple Intelligence exclusive feature on the iPhone 16 series, you need to hold down the camera control button and point the iPhone at an object around you.
The on-device AI recognizes your surroundings and helps. It recognizes you’re pointing at a restaurant and provides hours and reviews. It also lets you add an event to your calendar app when you see a street ad.
Visual intelligence will also help you identify animals and objects. Finally, it will help you search the web for things you see around you. It's Apple's version of Google Lens and an emerging Circle to Search alternative.
The Future of Touch ID
The camera control button could change the way you use your iPhone. Given the complexity of the hardware and software, I can't help but wonder if Apple could also include Touch ID support in this button, perhaps a future version of the camera control would include this feature.
For users like me, it may seem a bit redundant. I don't care about unlocking my iPhone in my pocket, and when I hold my iPhone 16 up to my face, it is already authenticated by Face ID. But Touch ID still has many fans.
