Stanford University professor Fei-Fei Li's new company World Labs has successfully raised $230 million. Fei-Fei Li is known as the "godmother of AI" and her company has received support from investors such as Andreessen Horowitz, NEA and Radical Ventures. World Labs is valued at more than $1 billion, and the funds were raised in two rounds, completed a few months apart.
World Labs plans to launch its first product in 2025. World Labs aims to develop AI models that can understand and interact with the three-dimensional world, which it calls "large world models." These models will be used by professionals such as artists, designers, developers and engineers. Martin Casado, a partner at Andreessen Horowitz, said these customers could include game companies or movie studios.
What is Spatial Intelligence?
Spatial intelligence is an important aspect of human intelligence that allows us to understand and interact with the world around us. Through spatial intelligence, humans are able to build visual images in their minds and transform these images into things in the real world, from simple sand castles to tall buildings. World Labs believes that artificial intelligence will help humans build a better world in the future. Although AI has made rapid progress, we have only seen the initial stages of the generative AI revolution. Current AI mainly relies on language models and models that generate images and videos from text, but this is just the tip of the iceberg. To further improve the capabilities of AI, World Labs believes that we need to develop intelligent AI models that can handle 3D space and time.
World Labs’ Vision
World Labs' mission is to empower AI with rich spatial intelligence by developing "Large World Models" (LWMs), enabling it to perceive, generate, and interact with the 3D world. The goal is to expand the current 2D AI model to a full 3D virtual and real world. Human spatial intelligence has evolved over thousands of years, and World Labs hopes to give AI this capability in the short term in this era of rapid progress.
The ultimate vision of World Labs is to provide users (such as artists, designers, developers, and engineers) with tools to help them create and edit in virtual space through these AI models with spatial intelligence. These AI models can not only generate 3D worlds, but also handle the physics, semantics, and control of them, allowing people to freely create and explore virtual worlds.
Company Goals of World Labs
World Labs aims to develop increasingly powerful models in the future that will have broader capabilities and can be applied in a variety of fields to work and innovate with humans. The company will focus on generating 3D worlds without limits, helping creative users and professionals such as artists, designers, and developers to create and edit virtual spaces. This is not just about letting AI generate from 2D images or videos, but extending to full interaction with 3D worlds.
Technologies and Products of World Labs
In the coming months, World Labs will share more details about its technology and products. The core of its technology is to develop "foundation models" with spatial intelligence, which can recognize objects and places in the 3D world and handle their relationships and interactions. World Labs' products will help users in various industries, especially in the fields of art, design, engineering and development.
Funding and partners
To achieve these ambitious goals, World Labs has raised more than $230 million in funding from major investors including:
- Martin Casado and Sarah Wang, partners at Andreessen Horowitz
- Scott Sandell, NEA
- Jordan Jacobs of Radical Ventures
In addition, the company has received support from many well-known individuals and institutions, including investors such as:
- Individual investors: Marc Benioff, Jim Breyer, Ron Conway, Jeff Dean, Geoffrey Hinton, Reid Hoffman, Andrej Karpathy, Ashton Kutcher (co-founder of Sound Ventures), Eric Schmidt, Ram Shriram, Anne Wojcicki and the late Susan Wojcicki.
- Institutional investors: Adobe Ventures, AMD Ventures, Databricks Ventures, NVentures (NVIDIA’s venture capital arm), and Shinrai Investments LLC.
Future Directions of World Labs
World Labs believes that AI is a key link in promoting human technological progress, rather than an independent entity. The company's goal is to promote the development of human creativity through AI and spatial intelligence. By training powerful spatial intelligence AI models, World Labs hopes to promote further innovation in science, technology, art and design.
Currently, World Labs is recruiting more talents and encouraging people who are interested in its research to join the team. The company will focus on the entire process from research to engineering to products, ensuring that each link works closely together to push AI to new heights.
